“Artist Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, known as Christo, passed away of natural causes today, on May 31, 2020, at his home in New York City. “

Christo, artist who wrapped landmarks, dies at 84.

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff was born on 13 June 1935 in Gabrovo, a small town in the Bulgarian mountains.

His father Ivan was a chemist who ran a factory making fabrics. His mother, was Tzveta Dimitrova, a political activist.

Jeanne-Claude. In Paris Christo made a living painting portraits on the street. A woman saw an example at the hairdressers and liked it, inviting the struggling artist to her chateaux to paint a picture of her.

The woman’s daughter was flame-haired Jeanne-Claude. She would become Christo’s wife.

“Jeanne-Claude passed away in November 2009, but Christo continues with his work on Over The River and The Mastaba. The artists’ goal has always been to create works of art of joy and beauty, without charging any viewing fees.”

Statement from Christo’s office:

“Christo lived his life to the fullest, not only dreaming up what seemed impossible but realizing it. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artwork brought people together in shared experiences across the globe, and their work lives on in our hearts and memories.”
