Cork is an impermeable buoyant, flexible material, the phellem layer of bark tissue that is harvested for commercial use primarily from Quercus suber (the cork oak), which is endemic to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. Cork is composed of suberin, a hydrophobic substance. Wikipedia.
Is Cork a wood?
Cork is made from the bark of a tree, Quercus suber, or the cork oak. These trees can grow pretty big, and they have really thick, rugged bark. Look to the image below.

Harvesting. Cork is extracted only from May to August, when the cork can be separated from the tree without causing permanent damage.
