First Where, Then Fast
About progress and direction
Progress isn’t just about speed — it’s primarily about direction.
While we may feel stationary, we’re always moving relative to a changing world.
The key questions are “Where are we going?” and “Is that where we want to go?”
Many focus on the pace of change (we need to move faster!) while skipping the more fundamental question: are we moving in the right direction?
A fast pace in the wrong direction only gets us further from our goals.
This is why strategy matters so much
It’s the thoughtful work of choosing direction before we pour energy into movement.
Without clear direction, velocity becomes meaningless or even counterproductive.
So instead of asking “Why aren’t we moving faster?”, we should first ask:
- What’s our intended destination?
- Is our current direction aligned with that goal?
- How will we know if we need to adjust the course?
