Woodcut is a relief printing technique in art printmaking.

An artist carves an image into the surface of a block of wood, with gouges (
a chisel with a concave blade, used in carpentry) leaving the printing parts level with the surface while removing the non-printing parts.

Relief printing is a family of printing methods where a printing block, plate, or matrix, which has had ink applied to its non-recessed surface, is brought into contact with the paper.

Areas that the artist cuts away carry no ink, while characters or images at the surface level carry the ink to produce the print.

The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller leaving ink on the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas.

I used an image as a prompt for the MidJourney.

1. Woodcut by Dürer of his coat of arms, which featured a door as a pun on his name, as well as the winged bust of a Moor.
