Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet (31 July 1901–12 May 1985) was a French painter and sculptor.
His aesthetics avoided traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic approach to the creation of images.
Dubuffet was a tireless experimenter. He frequently developed new techniques and was the founder of Art Brut.
Art brut is a French term that translates as ‘raw art’.
It was invented by Dubuffet to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art.
