Sketching is almost everything. It is the painter’s identity, his style, his conviction, and then color is just a gift to the drawing. ~Fernando Botero.

Sketching is … for me is a fast and finished drawing.

Making sketches from a live model whose pose and sometimes changes every few minutes.

A “sketch” is a quick and loosely drawn work. It’s a fast drawing.

A “preparatory drawing” usually refer to more finished and careful works to be used as a basis for a final work, often in a different medium, but the distinction is imprecise. Wikipedia.

Sketch of Thomas E. Mulvihill Sr., 1908.

Thomas E. Mulvihill Sr., 1908

Thomas E. Mulvihill Sr. about 1863–1942. He was known as “Czar” Mulvihill in St. Louis, Missouri, because of his rigid enforcement of liquor laws when he was excise commissioner of that city.

Mulvihill was born in Ireland about 1863 and was brought to the United States when he was four years old. He graduated from the Washington University School of Law in 1885. He was St. Louis city attorney under Mayor Edward A. Noonan and later was elected prosecuting attorney.
