Steganography: Concealing Data Within Another Medium
In the image, an audio file, or video
Yes, algorithms can hide entire libraries of information within seemingly innocent images.
This technique is known as steganography, a method of concealing data within another medium, such as an image, audio file, or video, in a way that is not detectable to the human eye or ear.
Steganography has been used for centuries, but modern algorithms have made it incredibly sophisticated and powerful.
How Steganography Works
Steganography works by subtly altering the data of a carrier file (like an image) to embed hidden information.
For example, in a digital image, each pixel is represented by a set of binary values determining its color.
An algorithm can encode additional information without noticeably altering the image's appearance by making tiny, imperceptible changes to the least significant bits (LSBs) of these values.
To the human eye, the image looks unchanged, but the hidden data is embedded within it.
Hiding Libraries of Information
While hiding a small amount of data (like a short message) is relatively straightforward, hiding entire libraries…
