The Space Between: What Minimalism Means
Art and Design
I used to think minimalism was about having less stuff.
Then I realized it’s actually about having more space — space to breathe, think, feel what matters.
When I first encountered minimalist art, I must admit, I was initially annoyed.
It needs something else…Once I saw a painting hanging at MoMA full of space…
Can you imagine how I felt… a strong desire to draw over that painting, to include something.
But I did in my imagination.
A white canvas with a single black line? What?
Now I love a line, a strong line, a gesture…
But then I stood in front of an Agnes Martin painting for twenty minutes, and something shifted.
All that emptiness wasn’t empty at all.
It was full of possibility, of quiet, of room for my thoughts to settle.
