Viva Magenta, Pantone Color of the Year 2023, and The Arts
Magenta is a versatile, bold, and expressive color.
What is Viva Magenta?
"Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta 18–1750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative." — Pantone.
Magenta got its name in 1860 from this aniline dye that was originally called “fuchsine”, after the fuchsia flower.
The color magenta was created by a French chemist, who named it after a battle between French-Sardinian forces and Austria which took place in a town of the same name in Italy on June 4, 1859.
Paul Gauguin, Portrait of Marie Lagadu (1890).
Magenta became a popular fashion color in the second half of the nineteenth century.
