“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.” ~Jean-Paul Sartre.

A philosopher is someone who challenges the common sense. Never stops asking questions. And reexamines old ways of thinking.

Philosophos, meaning ‘lover of wisdom’. The coining of the term has been attributed to the Greek thinker Pythagoras (6th century BCE).

How can philosophers help now?

Socrates

“Socrates found that his philosophical way of life gave him courage.” says Prof Paul O’Grady.

“Philosophy is not a body of knowledge, but a mindset, a questioning. It is a love of wisdom, a way of linking reason with values and emotions, with the goal of living and dying well.”

“Know Thyself,” as well as Socrates’ belief in the importance of examining one’s own life.

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Socrates pointed out that human choice was motivated by the desire for happiness.

Seneca

“Cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will,” Seneca.
