Up until 1973, if you wanted to make a phone call while out on the town, you had to go to a payphone booth or find another type of landline phone at a public place like a store or restaurant.

Then in April of 1973, eng Martin Cooper made the first-ever mobile phone call using a device he helped create for Motorola called the DynaTAC (or simply “the brick”).

The call was made from Sixth Avenue in New York City to Cooper’s rival at AT&T bell labs — Joel Engel.

The phone weighed almost two pounds. The battery life was 30 minutes, and each charge took 10 hours to complete.
