A term that comes from early Lisbon, which was famous for growing lettuce.

Alfacinha is a term to denote a person from Lisbon, the etymology of which is unclear.

The first known reference was in the mid-19th century, in the book Travels in My Land by Almeida Garrett (1846).

A lithograph of Garrett, by Pedro Augusto Guglielmi.

Almeida Garrett was a Portuguese poet, orator, playwright, novelist, journalist, politician… A major promoter of theater in Portugal he is considered the greatest figure of Portuguese Romanticism and a true revolutionary and humanist. He was born in Porto.

The term “Alfacinhas” was popularized by Almeida Garrett.
in the mid-nineteenth century, in the book “Travels in My Land”.

“For you will stay forever, taking care that all the squares of this world are like …”

I’m in Lisbon right now, and a friend pops up with the term, that I have never heard about it. So, my big curiosity brought me to this after a little research.

In Lisbon, lettuce (Alface) is an abundant plant. Also, the city has abundant nice warm…
